Australian Among the Injured in NYE Fire That Killed 40 in Switzerland's Ski Resort

An Australian is among the 115 individuals wounded in a inferno that engulfed a crowded bar during a New Year’s Eve party in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, claiming 40 lives.

Government Statement on Australian Casualty

The Australian minister for climate and energy, Chris Bowen, stated early Friday that an Australian had been injured and was getting both hospital treatment and embassy aid.

“It is plainly a dreadful, dreadful disaster and I’m sure all Australians send their condolences to the nation of Switzerland, the individuals affected,” the minister said during ABC RN radio.

He continued, “It can be confirmed an Australian national was injured and is obtaining hospital treatment and the family is receiving support, support from Australian diplomats. Further details cannot be shared for privacy reasons. The individual's name is being withheld at this point.”

Department Assistance and Ongoing Inquiries

The nation's foreign affairs department stated this morning it was giving consular help to the affected individual and their relatives.

A department representative said: “The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) is providing consular assistance to the relatives of an Australian national that has been wounded and is in care following the fire. Due to our confidentiality duties we are not in a position to give more details.”

The spokesperson added, “DFAT is conducting urgent checks with Swiss officials to determine whether any additional Australians were affected. We stand ready to provide consular assistance.”

Scope of Diplomatic Support

Such support may involve:

  • Contacting or going to local hospitals.
  • Coordinating with Swiss authorities.
  • Provision of lists of medical providers.
  • Support for reaching out to next of kin.

Circumstances Surrounding the Tragic Fire

Authorities in Switzerland stated the inferno ignited at approximately 1:30 am, local time, in a tavern favored by holidaymakers called the Constellation, which is situated in the heart of the alpine resort.

Recordings of the tragedy shows orange flames billowing from inside the first-floor establishment. Cries and blaring music are audible, and several people were seen collapsed outside the building.

A number of those who perished in the blaze have not been able to be identified yet due to the extent of their injuries.

Cause and the Blaze's Cause

Authorities confirmed the fire was not deliberately set for the inferno, which is considered to be the outcome of a mishap.

Information for Worried Relatives

Citizens anxious regarding family members who may have been caught up in the fire were advised to call the Australian diplomatic emergency hotline on 1300 555 135.
