Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
