Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Team Versus Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side following scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.

Labuschagne has featured in 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes

There have been indications of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a answer to their opening batting issues.

Pace Returns and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
