A team of photography enthusiasts based in the island nation have recorded visual evidence of red lightning, counted as the most elusive light phenomena globally, where bright red bursts appear in the atmosphere.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists began their evening to shoot the night sky over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.

Initially believing they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that night, but their night turned into “a night to remember,” an individual involved remarked.

“He was checking his files for a stellar landscape and found he had recorded red sprites,” he explained. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the dark.”

Defining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, caused by storm systems. Unlike lightning that shoots towards the earth, the phenomena propel upward towards the upper atmosphere, producing shapes that are similar to pillars, tapered shapes or even jellyfish. The initial image of a this phenomenon was recorded – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a group at the University of Minnesota.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but one photographer got lucky. “I happened to be looking straight toward an occurrence when it took place – just a perfect coincidence viewing the correct area of the heavens and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he said.

Seeing the phenomena was a aspiration for the photographer, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It looks like you witness an impossible sight, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to see.”
