Synthetic graphics purporting to show Venezuela's president detained after his capture by the United States have gained many millions of impressions on social media. The Way AI Images of Maduro Emerged Soon After Initial fake synthetic picture apparently displaying him being escorted off a plane emerged shortly after. The picture was not shared any verified government accounts; rather, it was published on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”. Verification involved the SynthID tool, determining the picture was created or altered with Google AI. Additional synthetic pictures began to spread in the ensuing period, appearing to show different views of the leader under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures reveal they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx. The detection tool says the further pictures were similarly produced using Google AI. Real Photo Released but Fabrications Persisted The former US president shared the first real photo of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. However, despite this real photo was released, AI-generated pictures kept circulating but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro. Reverse image searches show these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art profile. Once again, SynthID confirms the new graphics were produced with Google AI. Main Takeaways: Synthetic media circulated quickly following the events of the president's apprehension. The initial fabricated image was shared on the same day on platform X. Tools like Google’s SynthID helped to identify the pictures as synthetic. Fabrications persisted to spread and evolve even after the release of real images.
