Waymo's Self-Driving Cabs Planned for London Roads Starting 2026.

American firm Waymo has revealed that its driverless vehicles will be available for use on London's streets starting next year.

UK Capital Named as Leading European City for Autonomous Ride-Hailing.

London will emerge as the inaugural European city to host an autonomous taxi service, similar to those currently familiar in multiple US cities and several American locations using Waymo's advanced platform.

Preliminary Operations to Commence with Human Specialists.

Waymo confirmed that its fleet are presently traveling to London and will commence operating on the city's public roads in the next few weeks with safety drivers behind the wheel.

Waymo – initially formed as a spin-off from Google's self-driving car project and part of the Alphabet family – indicated it would expand activities and work closely with the government transport body and London's transport agency to secure the essential licenses to provide fully autonomous services by 2026.

Growing Interest in Autonomous Mobility In London.

Further organizations, including Uber and the UK-based tech company Wayve, have also declared their own intentions to test self-driving taxis in the capital next year.

This is in response to the UK authorities confirming it would fast-track regulations enabling real-world tests to take place before laws supporting driverless transport is enacted in full.

“It is exciting that Waymo plans to introduce their offerings to London next year, under our suggested trial program,” commented the government minister, the secretary.

“Supporting the AV market will increase inclusive travel alternatives alongside generating work, capital, and possibilities to the UK. Innovative investment like this will assist in achieving our mission to be global pioneers in advanced innovation and drive economic growth.”

Complete Launch Projected After Regulatory Framework Takes Effect.

A fuller rollout of autonomous vehicles is anticipated in the UK after the Automated Vehicles Act fully takes effect in late 2027.

The Company's Established Connections in the United Kingdom and Beyond.

Waymo presently has links to the UK after launching its inaugural European research base in Oxford in 2019.

It is also starting operations in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover eco-friendly cars, marking its sole additional current venture outside the US.

“Our experience shows how to responsibly scale fully autonomous transport solutions, and we look forward to expand the positive impacts of our systems to the United Kingdom,” remarked Waymo's co-chief executive, explaining that the system was “making roads safer and transportation more inclusive”.

Proven Experience in the US.

Waymo introduced its driverless taxis in 2020 and currently states it has served more than a vast number of passengers in the United States.

In spite of some alarming events, Waymo indicated that evidence showed that cars controlled by people were linked to incidents that harmed pedestrians at a much higher rate than its driverless vehicles.
